Baden Powell Outdoor Centre -Brownsea Island

Located on a SSSI site on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour this building was designed to celebrate the centenary of Baden Powell’s first scout camp on the island. The buildings are made from pre fabricated insulated timber panels which were made on the mainland and transported to the island by barge.

These timber framed buildings, inspired by the form of a ridge pole tent, are clad with cedar shingles and provide a teaching space, shower and WC facilities, sleeping accommodation and a Heritage centre which opens to a large timber decked external activity area.

There are no main electrical or gas supplies to this part of the island and the building was designed to be energy self sufficient. The glazed gables maximise natural light in the building and minimise the electrical power requirements which are provided by a wind turbine. Hot water and heating is provided through a wood burning boiler.
